The Application of Sediment Microbial Fuel Cells in Aquacultural Sediment Remediation

To successfully apply sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) in remediating aquacultural sediments and water bodies on a large scale, SMFC systems with different electrode materials (carbon fiber brush, graphite felt, carbon cloth) structural forms were constructed, the advantages disadvantages of various electrodes compared terms electricity generation, pollutant removal, application cost. The results revealed that (1) introducing SMFCs accelerated removal pollutants from overlying water, promoted degradation organic matter fixation phosphorus sediments, inhibited eutrophication algal blooms; (2) brushes felt exhibited better but smooth surface cloth was not conducive to attachment, leading relatively low power density; (3) external resistance electron transfer increased rate.
